Self-esteem

By: Barbara Reichelderfer  (Learning Support teacher)

Self-esteem can be defined as the opinion you have of yourself based on your attitude and values. Who helps us form our self-esteem?  When do we learn positive self-esteem?  You can't give children positive self-esteem.  They have to earn it by accomplishing things on their own and realizing their successes.  It is our job, as parents and teachers, to provide opportunities for them to earn the success genuinely in order to gain individual confidence.  It is our job to help them realize their successes.  It is our job to let them know they are worthy of being loved.

Ways to foster self-esteem include the following.

  1. Realize the child's strengths/skills and give encouragement.

  2. Praise the child using sincere compliments and statements.

  3. Make the child's home and school a safe haven.

  4. Pass on to our children the time, patience, understanding and love that others shared with us as we were growing.

Growing up with families who care, participating in sports and other group activities, receiving religious training to learn God's message can contribute to the development of high self-esteem.  As someone new to Sacred Heart School, I am impressed with the ethos of the school and the commitment of the faculty/staff to the personal development of each child. SHS genuinely nurtures positive self-esteem in our children.

                                            Thank You!

Due to the participation of our great school family Catholic School Week was a great success. Thanks to everyone who brought food for the teacher's luncheon, drove for skating and bowling, and participating in other special events. Also a big thanks to all of the faculty and staff for surviving another Catholic School Week!
