Reading

At Sacred Heart, we use the Open Court and Scott Foresman publishing companies.  Open Court is a phonics approach to reading where Scott Foresman reinforces the phonics from Open Court but also concentrates on the areas of all comprehension skills.

Mathematics

Addition and subtraction facts through 18.  Place value of numbers in the ones and tens place.  Fractions of 1/2, 1/3, 1/4.  Spatial and flat shapes.  Symmetry. Measurement using the metric and standard units. Telling time to 1/2 hour and hour. Identifying and counting money. Adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers without regrouping. Interpreting bar and picture graphs.

Grammar/English

Identifying the parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases.  Identify the components of a sentence: the naming part and telling part.  Identify the kinds of sentences: telling, asking, command and exclamation.  Use correct punctuation marks.  Writing sentences correctly.  Writing a letter and thank you note.  Writing cinquains, a simple form of poetry.  Writing a paragraph.

Spelling

Beginning, middle and ending sounds. Words with short and long vowel sounds.  At the beginning of the second grading period, spelling tests are given each Friday with ten words. In January, children are offered the option of taking a test using 15 words.  A bonus word is always assigned too for an additional 5 points.  Bonus words consist of the days of the week or months of the year.

Science

Animals, plants, living and nonliving things.  Solar System.  Rocks and soil.  Magnets.  Matter - solids, liquids and gases. Weather.

Social Studies

Citizenship, communities, continents, oceans, historical people, Native Americans, Pilgrims, economics, savings, investment, laws, government, map skills, land forms and our natural resources.
